We try to schedule courses on a regular basis to better match your busy schedules. However, there are some things that you may want to consider to optimize your learning experience: If you are new to the building industry, we recommend that you take Construction Technology & Building Science before Ontario Building Code: Part 9 - The House as it may help you better understand some fundamental course concepts. You should try to take Business Planning & Management last because the course will help you prepare for your builder interview with HCRA. ​ ​ Will I get a paper certificate if I pass the course? ​ You will receive an electronic certificate upon successful completion of a course. Please let us know if you need a physical copy and we can arrange a pick-up at our office. You will need to give us prior notice if you will be picking up your certificate. We will also submit a Statement of Achievement to the HCRA when you are done with all your courses. You can request a Statement of Achievement from us here. ​ ​ How do I prepare for the builder application with HCRA? ​ We have a course for that! Our Business Planning & Management course will provide insight on the process and help you prepare the required documents and information for your builder license application with the HCRA. ​ Detailed information can be found on the Become a Licensed Builder page on the HCRA website. ​ ​ I haven't been in school for a while and I'm anxious about the exams. What should I do? ​ Don't worry, we offer lots of support for all of our classes. If you have any questions about the class, our facilitators are always there to help you out. Our courses have supplemental materials and textbooks that help you to better learn the content. ​ We also find that social learning is really effective so we provide lots of opportunities to work with your peers during our workshops. It may also help to create a study group with your fellow classmates. ​ Some students are anxious about passing the exam, but we offer on free rewrite! That means if you fail, we will administer an exam rewrite for you at no extra cost. If you are unsuccessful during your rewrite, you will need to enroll in the course again. ​ ​ Do I need to buy any textbooks? ​ We strive to create a complete learning experience for all our participants, so you will be provided with the necessary textbooks for nearly all of our workshops. There are two exceptions where the publication of the material is beyond our control. These courses are: ​Financial Planning & Management Ontario Building Code: Part 9 - The House ​ We will provide instructions on how to purchase these additional materials upon registration. ​ Is there any special technology that I will need to participate in the virtual courses? ​ We believe in creating an exciting and complete learning experience, so in order to fully participate in our interactive and discussion-filled sessions, you will need a working microphone and webcam. Most laptop devices have these functions built-in, but you should ensure everything is working properly prior to the first class. If you need any assistance in setting up your device, please feel free to contact us . ​ Are there still exams for the virtual courses? How are they conducted virtually? ​ Like our in-person classes, all exams will be conducted during the workshop sessions. Prior to thescheduled exam time, students will receive a secure examination link. We require that all students have their webcams on while the exam is in progress so that the instructor and invigilators can monitor. ​ ​ How long are the virtual classes? ​ The length of the virtual classes will vary from course to course. Most courses will require multiple sessions to cover all the materials and the final exam. The duration of each session may range from 3-5 hours. Breaks and lots of activity-based exercises will be provided, so it won't feel long at all! ​ ​ Are all your courses offered virtually? ​ Most of our courses will be available virtually. What is a challenge exam? How do I know if I can take it? Challenge exams are for those who have significant construction industry experience or subject matter expertise. To determine whether you may be successful in writing the challenge exam, review the course syllabus for the OBC course here: https://www.trainingbuilders.ca/obc-the-house ​ 2. How do I prepare for a challenge exam? For the purposes of invigilation, please ensure that you have the zoom application installed on to your computer. You also need a working camera and microphone. You will not be permitted to write the exam without your camera. ​ Prior to starting your exam, you will be asked to present a government issued photo ID to the exam invigilator and asked to do 360 degree scan of your room to ensure you are in a secluded and quiet location. 3. Is there a fee to the challenge exam? Yes. Each challenge exam has a fee of $139 + HST. 4. What are the security protocols for the challenge exam? Your camera must be on for the entire duration of the exam. If your camera is not visible, your exam will be terminated. To write the exam, you must be in a quiet and secluded room. Before your exam begins, the invigilator will check that there is no one else present in the room. You are NOT permitted to use your cell phone during the exam. For calculation questions, please ensure that you have a physical calculator. Please refrain from talking during the exam or reading the questions out loud. 5. Are there any preparatory course materials to prepare for the challenge exam? Preparatory course materials are confined to the current OBC Volume 1 & 2 to those who chose to challenge an exam. The course description pages contain the competency syllabus for each course. 6. I have attempted a challenge exam and failed. What are my next steps? The passing grade for the exams is 70%. If you fail an exam you must enroll into the respective competency course to learn the appropriate content. Only ONE challenge exam attempt is available for each of the competency courses. If you are unsuccessful, you are required to take the full course before being allowed any subsequent attempts. ​ 7. Are we allowed to google answers?
