How do I become registered with Tarion?
There are three steps to become a licensed Part 9 residential builder in Ontario:
Complete seven educational competencies
Register with Tarion
Get interviewed by a Tarion representative.
What courses do you offer?
buildABILITY offers all seven educational competencies in-class. Our seven Tarion-approved courses are:
Legal Issues in Housing
Financial Planning & Management
Construction Technology & Building Science
Ontario Building Code: The House (offered in partnership with BILD)
Site Supervision: Project Management & Scheduling
Customer Service & Tarion Warranty
Business Planning & Management
We also offer a number of different workshops and seminars which you will find on our homepage.
Can I get a discount if I sign up for all seven courses?
There is no individual discount, but we do offer a group discount for groups of 6 or more. Please contact us for the special rates.
Is there any funding available for taking your courses?
We encourage you to check out the Canada-Ontario Job Grant. According to Employment Ontario, "The Canada-Ontario Job Grant provides direct financial support to individual employers or employer consortia who wish to purchase training for their employees." There are a number of criteria that must be met so you should read the requirements on their website and if you have any questions, you can contact the Employment Ontario Contact Centre.
Do I need to take the Tarion courses in a specific order?
No, there is no specific order that you need to take the courses in. We usually schedule them in an order that would best facilitate learning, but this order does not have to be followed. Some things that you may want to consider are below:
If you are unfamiliar with the building industry, we recommend that you take Construction Technology & Building Science before Ontario Building Code: The House as it may help you better understand the course concepts
You should take Business Planning & Management last because the course will help you get ready for your interview with Tarion
Will I get a paper certificate if I pass the course?
You will receive an electronic certificate upon successful completion of a course. Paper certificates will be available upon request for pick-up at our office. Please give us prior notice if you will be picking up your certificate.
What is the interview process like?
Our Business Planning & Management course will provide insight on the process and guide you on the documents and information that need to be prepared for your interview with Tarion.
We also have a binder in our office that serves as a template. This binder can be viewed by students who have taken the Business Planning & Management course with us.
I haven't been in school for a while and I'm anxious about the exams. What should I do?
You should not worry, we offer plenty of support for all of our classes. If you have any questions about the class, our facilitators are always there to help you out. Our courses have a range of materials and textbooks that help you to better learn the content. It may also be a good idea to create a study group with your fellow classmates.
If you are worried about passing the exam, it may help to know that we offer one free rewrite. That means if you fail, you will come in to our office to rewrite the exam at no extra cost. Additional rewrites will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and a fee may be charged.
Do I need to buy any textbooks?
You will be provided with necessary textbooks except for the following two classes:
Financial Planning & Management
Ontario Building Code: The House
Instructions on how to purchase these additional materials will be provided the course page or registration form.
What is your refund policy?
If you need to cancel your registration from a course and it is:
More than 7 days prior to the first day of the course, you will receive a full refund or transfer credit less a $100 + HST administration fee.
Less than 7 days prior to the first day of the course, you will receive a transfer credit less a $100 + HST administration fee, and will not be eligible for a refund.
In the event you cannot attend, you will be able to send someone else from your organization.
Cancellations must be received by phone or email.
Rescheduling, relocating, or cancelling events is at the discretion of buildABILITY Corporation. Should this happen, we will provide a notice 5 days prior to the seminar, you will not be charged.
